Hadith on Roads: Fourteen civic duties on public highways

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade sitting in the courtyards and roadsides. The Muslims said, “We cannot avoid it, we cannot do without it.” The Prophet said, “If you cannot, then give the road its due rights.” They said, “What are its rights?” The Prophet said, “Lowering the gaze, guiding the traveler, blessing one who sneezes when they praise Allah, and returning the greeting.”

Imam Ibn Hajar commented, “The sum of these hadith is fourteen etiquettes, which I arranged into three poetic verses as follows: I have gathered the manners for one wishing to sit by the road, from the words of a man who is the best of creation—Spread peace, speak kindly, bless the sneezer, and respond with grace—Help the burdened, aid the oppressed, rescue the distressed, guide the traveler as well as the perplexed—Enjoin the right, forbid the wrong, restrain the harm, lower the glance, and remember our Master for long.”
