Ibn Abbas on Barsisa: Shaytan misleads pious monk into adultery, murder, and idolatry

‘Atiyyah ibn Sa’d reported: Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, stated in regards to His words, “They are like Satan when he lures someone to disbelieve. Then after they have done so, he will say, I have absolutely nothing to do with you. I truly fear Allah—the Lord of all worlds!’ So they will both end up in the Fire, staying there forever. That is the reward of the wrongdoers,” (59:16-17) saying, “There was a monk among the Israelites who worshiped Allah and excelled in his worship. People would come to him from every land to ask him questions about religious knowledge, for he was a learned man. Three brothers had a beautiful sister, one of the most beautiful among the people. They wished to travel, but it weighed heavily upon them to leave her without protection. They went to the monk and said, ‘We intend to travel, and we know no one whom we trust more, nor anyone who seems safer to us than you. If you agree, we would like to leave our sister with you. She is severely ill. If she dies, then take care of her affairs, and if she lives, then look after her until we return’ He said, ‘I will take care of her for you, Allah willing.’ So he cared for her and treated her until she recovered and her beauty returned. One day he looked upon her and found her adorned. Satan continued tempting him until he slept with her, and she became pregnant. Then Satan filled him with remorse and made it seem good to him that he should kill her. When her brothers returned, they asked him, ‘What happened?’ He said, ‘She died, and I buried her.’ They said, ‘You did the right thing.’ Then they began seeing dreams and being informed that the monk had killed her and that she was buried beneath a certain tree. They went to the tree and found that she had indeed been murdered, so they seized the monk. Then Satan came to him and said, ‘I am the one who made adultery seem attractive to you, and I am the one who made killing her seem good. Will you give me what I ask, and I will save you?’ He said yes. Satan said, ‘Prostrate to me once.’ So he prostrated to him, but then he was executed anyway. Such is the word of Allah, ‘They are like Satan when he lures someone to disbelieve…’”
