Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When the land is fertile, travel at a moderate pace and give the riding animals their due rights, for Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness. When the land is barren, move quickly across it. Travel during the night, for the earth is traversed more easily at night. Beware of resting upon the roadway, for it is the refuge of snakes and the pathway of wild beasts.”
Imam Ibn ‘Abdul Barr commented, “Allah Almighty is gentle and He loves gentleness in all matters, and this meaning is general and includes riding animals, travelers, and others.”
