Ibn al-Qayyim said, “Some of the scholars said it was permissible to initiate the greeting of peace with the people of the Book in order to attain some benefit or need, or if it is feared he will be harmed, or if it is intended to maintain family relations, or something else like that… And it was the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that if he was greeted by anyone with peace, then he would return the greeting to whomever gave it.”
