Fudayl on Altruism: Let him not love for his sandal to be better

Ibn Rajab reported: Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding the verse, “This is the home of the Hereafter that We make for those who desire not exaltation in the earth,” (28:83) that it means, “It is one who does not love for even his sandal to be better than the sandal of another, nor for his shoelace to be better than the shoelace of another.”
