Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Jesus, son of Mary, saw a person he thought was stealing. Jesus said to him: Have you committed theft? The man said: No, by Him besides whom there is no God! Jesus said: I believe in Allah and disbelieve my own eyes.”

Imam Ibn Hajar commented, “As for the statement of Jesus, ‘I believe in Allah and disbelieve my own eyes,’ its meaning is: I accepted the word of the one who swore by Allah, and I rejected what appeared to me—namely, that the taking in question was theft. This is because it is possible that the man took something in which he had a rightful share, or something for which its owner had given him permission to take, or that he took it merely to inspect it and examine it, without intending usurpation or unlawful seizure.”

وقال ابن حجر وَقَوْلُ عِيسَى آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَكَذَّبْتُ عَيْنَيَّ أَيْ صَدَّقْتُ مَنْ حَلَفَ بِاللَّهِ وَكَذَّبْتُ مَا ظَهَرَ لِي مِنْ كَوْنِ الْأَخْذِ الْمَذْكُورِ سَرِقَةً فَإِنَّهُ يُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَذَ مَا لَهُ فِيهِ حَقٌّ أَوْ مَا أَذِنَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ فِي أَخْذِهِ أَوْ أَخَذَهُ لِيُقَلِّبَهُ وَيَنْظُرَ فِيهِ وَلَمْ يَقْصِدَ الْغَصْبَ وَالِاسْتِيلَاءَ
