Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would teach us the testimony of faith for sitting in prayer, just as he would teach us a chapter from the Quran. The Prophet would say, “Greetings, blessings, prayers, and good words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I testify that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Al-Nawawi said, “In this section is the tashahhud of Ibn Mas’ud, the tashahhud of Ibn Abbas, and the tashahhud of Abu Musa al-Ashari, may Allah be pleased with them. The scholars agreed upon the permissibility of all of them, but they disagreed over which of them is best. The position of Al-Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, and some of the companions of Malik is that the tashahhud of Ibn Abbas is best, due to the additional word, ‘Blessings.'”
