Ibn Umar reported: He heard that Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, had set out to Iraq, so he met up with him three days out. Ibn Umar said, “What do you intend?” Al-Husayn said, “Iraq.” Ibn Umar said, “While you have papers and letters with you?” Al-Husayn said, “These letters are their pledges of allegiance.” Ibn Umar said, “Do not go to them.” Al-Husayn refused, so Ibn Umar said, “I will share a narration with you. Gabriel came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he offered him the choice between the world and the Hereafter. The Prophet choose the Hereafter and he did not want the world. Indeed, you are part of the Messenger of Allah. No one like you will come again amongst you all. Allah will not turn it away from you but that it will be better for all of you.” Al-Husayn refused to turn back, so Ibn Umar embraced him and wept, saying, “I ask Allah to protect you from being killed.”
